Indonesian rowing competes in the Olympic qualifications in Japan and Thailand

Jakarta (medialnews) – The Indonesian rowing team will participate in the qualifying rounds of the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo that will take place simultaneously on May 5-7, 2021 in two countries, namely Japan and Thailand.

According to a written statement from PB-PODSI, the rowing team will be chasing Olympic tickets on Sunday at the Sea Forest Waterway, Tokyo, Japan. The team consists of seven male and female athletes led by the team manager, Ir. Budiman Setiawan.

Meanwhile, the rowing team will fight for canoeing and kayaking in Pattaya, Thailand. The team consists of eight male and female athletes led by team manager Ir. Sidharta Day.

The rowing team arrived Saturday morning (1/5) at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Japan, with the help of the airline Garuda Indonesia. The medical examination at the airport is very strict and thorough. It took about four hours for the health administration, including taking a Covid-19 test via saliva, to get out of the immigration gates, said head coach Dr. Dede Rohmat Nurjaya.

The team was immediately escorted to the Hearton Hotel, Higashinagawa, Shinagawaku, Tokyo and check-in for one person in one room for health observation, and were banned by the local government from visiting each other’s rooms.

“Team members are only allowed to leave the room to eat and go to the competition venue. Violators of this rule will face severe penalties,” said the coach who is also a teacher at Indonesian Education University (UPI), Bandung.

Team manager Ir. Budiman Setiawan said on Sunday (2/5) during a visit to the rowing qualifier at the Sea Forest Waterway (Central Breakwater) in Tokyo Bay that the weather conditions were not conducive to athletes to perform at their best.

According to Budiman, the water waves were too big to row, making it less profitable for the athletes to achieve peak performances. The wind was quite strong, as evidenced by the erection of several wind power generator towers.

“The venue (venue for the match) is not in favor of achieving performance in the Olympics, but was chosen for commercial purposes only as it is in the middle of a city and easy to view from the edge. The waves are like in the Atlantic, ”said Budiman, who is also the vice chairman of the PB-PODSI (Big Committee – Indonesian Rowing Sports Association).

The rowing team’s activities on the first day of Sunday (2/5) from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm local time include rigging or setting up the boat and its equipment, and trying out the 14km race track below 16 degrees Celsius. Lunch at the venue at 11am

The Indonesian rowing team currently in Tokyo consists of four male athletes namely Memo, Mahendra Yanto, Kakan Kusuma and Ardi Isadi as well as three daughters namely Juianti, Mutiara Rahma Putri and Melani Putri. They were led by the team manager, Ir. Budiman Setiawan, accompanied by head coach Dr. Dede Rohmat Nurjaya and coach Muhammad Hadris, and Doctor Anita Suryani Mansyur.

The Indonesian canoe and kayak athletes who competed in the qualifying rounds in Pattaya were Riska Andriani, Nurmeni, Dayumin, Stevani Maysche Ibo, while the son athletes Anwar Tarra, Yuda Firmansyah, Maizir Rsatriara and Adri Agus Mulyana.
