Home Secretary urged return ban to be respected so it is not like India

Mataram (medialnews) – Interior Minister (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian has called on the public to comply with Lebaran’s return home ban to prevent a spike in COVID-19 cases so that the same cases than in India do not occur.

“We shouldn’t be like in India. Why, because they are euphoric, forget to obey health protocols, rush in, don’t wear masks, and don’t keep a distance,” the minister said ‘Interior during a briefing in the ranks of West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government (NTB), which was attended by NTB Governor H Zulkieflimansyah and his deputy Hj Sitti Rohmi Djalilah on Saturday at the NTB Governor’s Hall in Mataram.

The Home Secretary highlighted what happened in India because in recent months there have been big events including regional elections in five states and religions which also generated very big crowds.

One of the most important is the Kumb Mela ritual, in which millions of Hindus bathe in the Ganges, without applying any health protocol.

There, thousands of people came to the ritual. As a result, the number of COVID-19 cases in India increased dramatically in one day, reaching the highest rate in the world.

“Not to mention that the stadiums are full everywhere, the audience is maskless, so we can see what is happening in India today. Not to mention the new variant of COVID-19 originating in India,” said the former national police chief Tito Karnavian.

According to the Home Secretary, the surge in COVID-19 cases in India could have happened in Indonesia if the government had not taken anticipatory measures, one of which was to ban the return to the house of Eid.

“This is why we are asking the public to understand and learn from the cases that have happened in India so that they do not happen in Indonesia,” he said.
