Ferrari found no gearbox damage, Leclerc defended pole Monaco

Jakarta (medialnews) – Guest driver Charles Leclerc will continue to start the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position after Ferrari found no damage to the driver’s SF21 gearbox after the inspection on Sunday.

Leclerc endured one of the strangest qualifiers of his career, taking his first pole in his hometown before crashing the SF21, crashing into the crash barrier and finishing Q3 prematurely with 18 seconds to go.

The Italian team also carried out an initial inspection earlier Saturday after qualifying without sustaining any significant damage.

“After a deeper check this morning, no visible damage was found in the @Charles_Leclerc gearbox, so the Monaco racer will start today’s race from pole position, as a result of qualifying,” Ferrari said on his Twitter account. .

Previously, Leclerc was concerned because if the team were forced to install a new gearbox component for the race, he would be penalized for a five-position retreat penalty, which would help Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to one position from pole. position on a circuit. which is notoriously difficult for riders to overtake rivals.

Ferrari has been surprisingly agile since Thursday’s free practice session on the Monte Carlo highway circuit.

Leclerc previously had a gearbox malfunction that left him only four laps in Thursday’s first free practice.

In FP2, however, Leclerc caused a surprise by surpassing the record time with Carlos Sainz finishing P2, confirming Ferrari’s speed on the Monte Carlo street circuit.

Ferrari still seemed nimble in FP3, despite finishing behind fastest racer Max Verstappen of the Red Bull team.
