BAM wants the Malaysia Open 2021 to be held with spectators

If the Malaysia Open 2021 is successful, it could be a benchmark for other sports to hold other international tournaments in Malaysia

Jakarta (MEDIALNEWS.COM) – The Malaysian Badminton Association (BAM) is hoping that fans will be able to enter the stadium to witness the Malaysia Open 2021 to be held May 25-30 at Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

BAM President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said BAM is currently still waiting for the green light from the health authorities and the Malaysian National Security Council (EQS).

In the implementation, BAM will also imitate several sports championship systems and protocols implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the bubble system’s application to Leg Asia in Thailand last January and the Malaysian football league.

“In terms of percentage (the number of fans allowed to participate) we might be able to use the MFL (Malaysian Football League) guidelines. This (Malaysia Open) is a major international tournament, ‘said Norza from Bernama on Sunday.

“If the Malaysia Open is successful in 2021, it could be a benchmark for other sports to hold other international tournaments in Malaysia,” he continued.

The Malaysian football league match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Melaka United FC on April 2 is a pilot tournament for implementing crowd management protocols to see if it is possible to bring fans to the stadium.

But Norza said he was still in talks with MKN about the concept of holding the Malaysia Open later, including questions about players’ quarantine procedures and swab test implementation.

BAM is also currently awaiting confirmation of the number of countries that will participate in the tournament.

If BAM’s proposal is approved, the Malaysia Open 2021 will become the first badminton tournament to be held with spectators during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The championship is also a crucial event for badminton players to increase their points and secure a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will be held July 23-August 8.
