Today's young generation tends to choose information content presented through video on social media instead of reading text content. This emerged from a survey result related to the media.

“Because it's faster to get information through video,” Nic Newman, senior researcher at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, said of video content on social media during a panel discussion session at the Global Media Forum 2024 (GMF24) in World Conference Center in Bonn (WCCB) on Tuesday.

According to Nic, his party conducted an online survey of 2,000 English-speaking respondents in ten user countries, including Thailand, Kenya, Malaysia, Indonesia and South Africa, asking about platforms commonly used to get news.

23 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 said they used TikTok to get news, while 43 percent used it for all searches and the rest for other things.

Nic revealed that there were three considerations from his respondents when watching social media broadcasts, firstly because they were judged without any technique and without bias or a specific agenda in the content.

“Why they like shows is because of a sense of trust… Another reason is because they think there is no specific agenda from the mainstream media,” Nic explains.

The second is that short duration summarizes the current content so that it is easier to digest.

“However, it also depends on the algorithm that presents relevant content based on personal wishes,” Nic added about the variety of content presented on social media.

The third point then relates to different perspectives and the completeness of content on social media platforms.

“They can explore virtually any topic from different perspectives. Long videos are for special in-depth content, while short videos are for previews,” the report said.

German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle organized the Global Media Forum 2024 (GMF24) on June 17 and 18, 2024 with the theme “Sharing Solutions” with the support of the German Foreign Ministry and the Government of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Discussions during the GMF24 panel session on the second day also raised the issue of journalist safety, the future of journalism and the use of artificial intelligence. (Ant/Z-7)
