PANDEMIC Covid-19, which has been around since 2020, has impacted various sectors, including the hotel industry. Many hoteliers have gone bankrupt and had to lay off staff due to lack of guests during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Best Western Hotels & Resorts Indonesia President Iwanto Hartojo talks about the moment he found himself in the pandemic, likening it to driving with his eyes closed.

“We don’t know what to do, what the future will look like, what steps to take, we are confused. I am sure these are difficult steps that hotel entrepreneurs in the world are facing,” Iwanto said during the Chief Talk event, Thursday, May 30, 2024.

In the pandemic situation at that time, Iwanto said that the income in the hotel he managed had dropped drastically. Because the government at that time made rules not to do activities outside.

“You can count the guests who came on your fingers, only 10, it’s really bad. We are confused,” he continued.

As time went by, he racked his brains to keep the hotel he was managing running. He even had to cut his salary and reduce his working hours. This is done to survive each other.

“At that time I gave basic necessities because they are human, they understand that I am struggling, they are struggling too, I have less (money), I gave (the basic necessities) to the employees to make them survive, so that the employees know that I am still thinking about them. And in the end they did not leave me, they stayed because there was a close relationship, he explained.
