Scotland defender Ryan Porteous became the first player to be sent off at the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

The Watford defender was shown a red card by France referee Clement Turpin for making a 60-yard tackle on the edge of the penalty area on Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan in the 44th minute.

Clement Turpin assessed the foul via the video assistant referee (VAR) and then gave Germany a red card and a penalty.

Arsenal striker Kai Havertz also managed to convert the penalty into Germany's third goal before halftime.

The German national team eventually wrapped up the match with a crushing 5-1 win over Scotland on Matchday 1 Group A at the Allianz Arena, Munich. The home team's five goals were scored by five different players, namely Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can. Scotland could only score a consolation goal in response to Antonio Rudiger's suicide.

Germany now sit first in Group A of Euro 2024 with three points from one match, while Scotland are bottom.

Germany then only needs to secure three points from the remaining two matches, namely against Hungary (19/6) or Switzerland (24/6), to ensure passage to the next round. (Ant/P-5)
