Minister of Communications and Information Budi Arie requests that internet access for online gambling in Cambodia-Philippines be cut off

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Minister of Communications and Information (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi has asked all telecommunications service providers for Internet Access Gateway (Network Access Point/NAP) services to cut off access to Internet communications suspected of being used for online gambling.

Budi Arie, who also serves as day-to-day chairman of the Task Force for the Prevention of Eradicating Online Gambling, has asked NAP to cut off access to internet communications lines believed to be used for online gambling, especially to and from Cambodia and Davao, the Philippines.

“We are doing everything we can to eliminate online gambling,” Budi Arie told Antara on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

This request is included in a letter from the Minister of Communications and Information of the Republic of Indonesia to telecommunications service providers of Internet Access Gateway (Network Access Point/NAP) services, letter number B-1678/M.KOMINFO/PI.02.02 /06/2024 dated June 21 2024.

In the letter, Budi Arie requested action to terminate access within 3×24 hours of signing the letter.

“Disconnecting access to internet communication lines suspected of being used for online gambling, especially to and from Cambodia and Davao, Philippines, within 3 x 24 hours (business days) of this letter being signed,” the letter said.

The period for terminating access will be evaluated to be immediately reinstated if the situation is favorable. NAP is also asked to report termination steps and the results of their implementation for review and follow-up.

This request refers to the provisions of Law No. 36 of 1999 on Telecommunications and the results of the meeting of the Task Force for the Eradication of Online Gambling led by the Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto on June 19, 2024.

The Ministry of Communications and Information is aggressively cutting off access to sites with online gambling content. From July 17, 2023 to June 13, 2024, the Ministry of Communications and Information blocked 2,945,150 online gambling contents.

The Ministry of Communications and Information also submitted a request to Bank Indonesia to close 555 e-wallet accounts related to online gambling activities and block 5,779 bank accounts related to online gambling to the Financial Services Authority from September 18 to 28, 2023 (OJK). May 2024.

From July 17, 2023 to June 13, 2024, the Ministry of Communications and Information processed 16,596 gambling page inserts on educational sites and 18,974 gambling page inserts on government sites.
